Because the game doesn't have weapons or armor as loot, you rarely find anything that sparks joy or excitement. Such as buffs to finding spirit emblems (these are practically infinite items, WHY even let you buff this?), buffs to finding sen, etc. It's semi-open, but everything kind of just blurs together and there isn't as much of a reward for exploration because most of the loot is just random bobbles that you will never use. My main gripe with this game is the overworld. The posture system ensures that even by holding block at all times you can still get killed fairly easily if you aren't hitting your deflects. Not unlike a Soulsborne game, you will want to use stealth or kiting to eliminate groups. Any encounter with multiple enemies is basically death if you try to engage them at once. That being said, it's still very challenging. It feels very tight, so it's really never worth trying. It is possible to dodge through attacks with i-frames, but we are talking something small like 2 frames. So 90% if you dodge to evade an attack, you will just get slapped and lose half HP. The dodge distance is so small that you don't really get out of enemy attack range with it, and you have a laughably small amount of i-frames. The other important tip is to never use dodge, unless you're dodging forward to mikiri counter. Once you learn that you can hold block at all times and still deflect, the game will click for you and feel much less punishing. But in this game, if you aren't blocking at all times, YOU WILL DIE. That's often how it works, especially if you are coming from a Soulsborne game. And if you are coming from basically any other game, you would intuitively think that you have to choose one or the other. It tells you that you can block, and that you can deflect. That's the magic that makes the game playable, but the game NEVER will tell you this. In fact, I think most people who quit did so because they didn't realize how the combat system is actually supposed to work.īasically, you can block AND deflect at the same time. I enjoyed this game, however there are a couple of things that make the experience SO much more balanced and fair that the game doesn't tell you.
