For their third, Stiles and Khyber tried something even more unusual: Their debut “Ojai” was written and recorded, one song per day, at a small house in that town their second album “Crane Point Lodge” was made amid ghosts and isolation in remote upstate New York. And hopefully the questions we begin to ask ourselves, change.įocusing on our dreams forces us to think about our intentions, giving us a sense of purpose that can carry us through our most difficult of days. The Good Listeners have made three albums of good listening, but the Los Angeles duo - Clark Stiles and Nathan Khyber - have always been as much about the process as the product. With the ambition and drive, we gain direction, positivity and confidence. Setting goals is important for our health and happiness, goals allow us to fulfil our potential, to put into practice all that we have learned and been taught and is part of our map, that at each turn, becomes our future. You may think this is the talk of an absolute typical boozy PR girl, but honestly, Where is the wine?Ī question like this got me thinking, why by choice are you still here in this workplace? Time to take charge, oh and grab a glass of wine! Going to work with people day in day out, and not having any down time to actually get to know each other - meant making no time to get to know each other. Not under my desk for a cheeky team drink, no trip to the local pub or bar, no friday pay day drinks, no monthly work party, nothing! This resulted in a lot of late nights working, bolting out of the office as soon as possible just to get home for a relaxing evening, and complete lack of team spirit. Where is the wine?!Īt least once a week, when the working week really got to me, secretly broke me a little bit and tested my last nerve, under the smiles and happy demeanour, I was always questioning why, as a PR, there was never any wine? I know, but I have to be honest with you. We focus on achieving our goals, focus on getting a job, the best job, do the 9 to 5 daily grind and feel like we are fulfilling our purpose.Īnd yet sometimes, we have to think, why are these our goals? Who in fact presented these goals for us? Why are we striving for the 9 to 5 when once we get it, realise there is so much more that can define us and our lives?Īnd a question, among all the questions I find I was asking myself, ‘where is the wine?!’. It’s enough to make you quit!!! Did I just say that out loud? Why can’t the way we spend our time, be ours especially when we are dedicated to the job role 1000% of the time. I find myself sick with worry or fear if I look at my personal phone and an email has arrived in my inbox and I haven’t replied in the 30 seconds or less time frame. These little moments put life into perspective. The usual text that delivers an hour before the contracted 6pm end to the day asking if we will see them for dinner is always met with either, ‘still working’ or, ‘not sure when I will be done’ text. Our incredible support system comes from our mother and father who can’t quite seem to tolerate the ball and chain that are our work desks. We don’t see much of each other, our clocks dictate our daily life, we are passing ships in the night, if my brother isn’t desperately trying to catch up with sleep, we are more like passing planes as he is finding himself commuting by airplane more than by tube. What do we want to be earning, what job title do we want, what sort of pay check would make us truly feel safe and worthwhile, what country do we want to live in, and where do we want to holiday next? The list is quite honestly, endless.Īlbeit, these are probably quite fantastic questions to have as a burden, (#firstworldproblems), and I don’t want to seem as coming across as arrogant, ignorant or quite simply, spoiled, but we work hard, really hard. Whether it could be for our careers, for our lives or for our happiness. I recently found myself at dinner with my brother and we were discussing how we seem to be constantly trying to figure out what the next best thing for us could be.
